ACC Baseball
Sweeps Into Brockton Boston College
set to host Miami Hurricanes on Saturday, May 2nd at
Campanelli Stadium
April
30, 2009 - Brockton, MA - The Boston College Eagles will host
the Miami Hurricanes in ACC conference play on Saturday, May 2nd
at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton. Saturday’s first pitch is
scheduled for 6:00 PM.
The
Eagles make their annual trip to Campanelli Stadium where they
have previously faced opponents such as Notre Dame, Maryland,
and Duke. This spring, Boston College welcomes the University of
Miami Hurricanes, a college baseball powerhouse and current
top-25 team.
The
contest lends itself to be a pivotal matchup between two teams
off to exceptional starts in 2009. The Eagles opened up
conference play by taking two of three games from then
sixth-ranked Florida State; accomplishing something no team has
ever done before. Florida State previously had been 43-5 in
games during the conference’s opening weekend since 1992, and
had never lost a conference-play opening series.
Boston
College (28-17 Overall, 11-11 ACC) has been led by Junior C Tony
Sanchez, named the ACC’s Player of the Week twice already this
season. A hot prospect for this Spring’s MLB Draft, Sanchez is
batting .366 with 12 home runs and 37 RBI this year. Sanchez
hails from Miami, Florida.
The
Miami Hurricanes (29-15 Overall, 13-11 ACC) are currently ranked
13th in the nation. The Hurricanes have had two
players recognized as the ACC Pitcher of the Week. Junior closer
Kyle Bellamy and Junior starter David Gutierrez earned the
honors earlier in the season.
Campanelli
Stadium is home of the Can-Am League’s Brockton Rox. Tickets
for the game between Boston College and Miami are currently
available at www.brocktonrox.com
or by calling the Brockton Rox Ticket Office at (508) 559-7000.
Admission for the game is $5.
Morton
Hospital Prepares for National Stroke Awareness Month
April
29, 2009 - Taunton, MA – More than 80 Morton Hospital
and Medical Center nurses and stroke committee members
recently met to kick off National Stroke Awareness
Month, beginning May 1. Since its inception, the group
has committed to bimonthly meetings to discuss the
Hospital’s progress in stroke care, as well as
breakthroughs and new treatment options.
Galen Henderson,
MD, (center) with Morton Hospital Stress Committee
members (l-r) Gary Grace, MBA; Barbara Chase, RNC; Lydia
Jefferson, BSN, RN; and Sharon Smith, RN.
Galen
Henderson, MD, Director of Critical Care Emergency
Neurology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital of Boston,
was guest speaker at the recent event held at Benjamin’s
Restaurant. Henderson, who is also an Assistant
Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and
Neurological Consultant for the American Stroke
Association, brought nurses from all departments up to
date on cutting-edge diagnostics and treatments for
patients experiencing strokes or transient ischemic
attacks (TIAs), also known as "mini-strokes"
that produce stroke-like symptoms.
"As
a designated stroke center, we must educate our
physicians, nurses and communities about stroke
management," said Barbara Chase, RNC, Nursing
Education. "It is critical that all of us
understand the signs of a stroke and act quickly to
increase the likelihood of effective, immediate care.
One of the key messages we are trying to convey is that
stroke symptoms such as weakness or slurring of speech
should be thought of as a possible ‘brain attack,’
just as chest pain and shortness of breath are
associated with a possible heart attack."
Morton
Hospital has been designated as a Primary Stroke Center
by the Department of Public Health, and has received
honors from Stroke Collaborative Reaching for Excellence
(SCORE) for its commitment to excellence in stroke care.

Massachusetts
House Votes to Hike Sales Tax
April

Deval Patrick.

Massachusetts
Continues its Response to Outbreak of Swine Flu 20
confirmed swine flu cases in United States; none
in Massachusetts at this time
April
28, 2009 - Boston,
MA — State health officials continue to work
closely with partners at the federal, state and
local level to respond to the swine flu outbreak
in the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC)
has declared the outbreak of swine flu a public
health emergency.
As
part of that declaration, federal officials have
begun shipment of significant quantities of
materials to help states prepare and respond to
the spread of swine flu. These materials include
antiviral medications for treatment of
individuals who are sick, along with other
medical equipment and supplies that may be
needed if the current situation changes.
Massachusetts will begin receiving initial
quantities of these materials in the coming
days.
“This
is understandably a concerning time for
Massachusetts residents who have heard so much
about swine flu over the past couple of days,”
said DPH Commissioner John Auerbach. “However,
I want to assure everyone that our team is
working overtime on this matter and I am
confident that we are taking all necessary
precautions to protect the people of the
Commonwealth.”
DPH
officials continue to take steps to increase
surveillance of influenza-like illness in
Massachusetts, asking health care providers and
hospital emergency departments to be on the
lookout for flu-like symptoms — especially in
people who have recently traveled to Mexico or
any of the U.S. states which have confirmed
cases. If a provider suspects a patient may be
infected with swine flu, DPH requests that they
perform and submit a swab test for laboratory
testing.
Even
though no cases have been identified in
Massachusetts, there are steps that everyone can
take to prevent getting or spreading any type of
influenza: wash your hands often with soap and
water or with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer;
cough or sneeze into a tissue or into your elbow
instead of into your hands; and if you’re
sick, stay home from work or school and limit
contact with others to avoid infecting them.
Swine
influenza is a respiratory disease of pigs
caused by type A influenza viruses. Outbreaks of
swine flu happen regularly in pigs. People do
not normally get swine flu, but human infections
can and do happen. Most commonly, human cases of
swine flu happen in people who are around pigs
but it’s possible for swine flu viruses to
spread from person to person as well. Swine flu
is not transmitted by food and you cannot get
swine flu by eating pork products.

BOOK REVIEW
7TH
Heaven (Fiction)
Author: James Patterson
Review by Shirley
Hogan
About
the Author James
Patterson is the world’s most popular thriller writer,
with over 150 million copies of his books in print
worldwide. Some of his best sellers include- 1ST
To Die, 2ND Chance, 3RD Degree, 4TH
of July, 5TH Horseman and 6TH
Target. They all include the "Women’s Murder
Club". For more information you can visit www.jamespatterson.com.
Michael
Campion, extremely well known son of California’s
ex- Governor, is missing. Often compared to the
Kennedy family, Michael has been very sheltered
due to an incurable heart defect.
Detective
Lindsey Boxer and her partner Rich have been
assigned to this case after Michael has been
missing for three months. In addition to working
on this case they are also given a case
involving fires in the homes of only the very
rich.
Many
leads came in, one of which directed Lindsey and
Rich to a prostitute who was said to be the last
person to see Michael. Also, whoever committed
the arsons left the same clue at each house
proving they were not accidents.
This
is the seventh installment of the "Women’s
Murder Club"- all friends of Lindsey’s.
They are a varied group of women who work
together to solve crimes.
James
Patterson has added just enough balance
including excitement, gore, mystery and curious
events to keep interest throughout. I definitely
would recommend this book. What a great read. I
have rated this book four out of five stars.
